A conference and art performance event for the hypergrid enabled virtual worlds. Not everyone in Opensim is fluent in English. HIE is a 2 day event where residents speak, in their own languages, about about grids they've made, problems they have overcome, their inventions, experiences, and art. And, so that everyone can follow the talks, there are subtitles in German, French, Italian, Spanish and yes, in English too !

Meet the Team: Kelso Uxlay

Kelso Uxlay started to explore virtual worlds via Second Life thanks to his RL partner known inworld as Dabici Straulino. They share a grid that re-creates inworld the magnificent Canadian countryside, in all its changing seasons, the snowy winter, the colorful fall and the greenery of the spring - they show us both the cultural history and the landscapes they both love so much. Kelso speaks German, French and English, so he is the perfect choice for Director of Translations for the Hypergrid International Expo.
Dabici & Kelso on CreaNovale
Kelso Uxlay: For a while, we had our own SL region. We subsequently moved to OSgrid where we had a region for a few years, until the big OSgrid crash of 2015 in which we lost most of your inventory. This sad event convinced us to start our own private grid CreaNovale in 2017. We work together as a team: Dabici focusses on landscape design and construction while Kelso put magics in the builds via scripting.

The event coming up in October is called Hypergrid International Expo. How important, in your opinion, is that word 'International' in this context?
Kelso Uxlay: With HIE, linguistic diversity is the key. HIE a concerted effort to give to languages other than English the space they deserve on OpenSim.

the event's publicity booths, our website, and portals to the main Auditorium
What do you hope people will get out of this Opensim event?
Kelso Uxlay: Opportunities! The opportunity of speaking or listening to presentation in its own language. The opportunity of establishing new contacts and extend networks. The opportunity of advertising grids, regions, events in languages other than English.
HIE is being held on Craft grid. Is that a good fit?
Kelso Uxlay: As far as I know, Craft is the only Opensim Grid with introductory documentation in 7 languages (Catalan, German, English, French, Italian and Sardinian). It has a long tradition of international events, artistic themes and educational regions. Being truly international, with plenty of space for languages other than English, it is the ideal venue for HIE.

What are the challenges in doing an event like the Hypergrid International Expo? What's the toughest part?
Kelso Uxlay: HIE has the chance to benefit from the infrastructure and procedures that were developed over the years for its English counterpart, the OpenSimulator Community Conference (OSCC). Of course, orchestrating multiple group chat channels to support simultaneous text subtitles broadcast of talks presented by speakers in their native language represents in itself an additional layer of complexity requiring a good team of translators and support people. It worked well in 2017, hopefully we will have the same success in 2023.
